And Brighton folk! Dont forget!:

Freaky Xmas market: 12 till 6pm @ the Caroline Of Brunswick pub just opposite The Level. See you there hopefully!

24/11/09: Xmas stall this saturday!

Hello my lovelies, Ive been staying up all night for the last week creating grotesquely beautiful christmas decorations and christmas cards for an upcoming stall at the Caroline Of Brunswick pub/venue in good old Brighton town this Saturday. Here’s some teasers of things I have for sale for all you people of the ‘gothic persuasion’:

Progress pictures of my hand-drawn cards:

2nd card design:

Handmade and hand painted gold decoration:

Balck flowers:

I have also made some lovely large black and glittery bows…pictures soon.

If you cannot make it down to the stall, fret not! Should I have any leftover stock, it will all appear on my etsy store. :)

Did I mention that I will be sharing a stall with my good friend Traumatron? Click there for his website…he has some some wonderfully goulish things for sale also!

More soon….

18/11/09: Creepy xmas stuff, more burlesque sketching &...hula.

I will be doing an alternative christmas craft fair on Saturday the 27th of November at the Caroline of Brunswick in Brighton, where some of my paintings are already hanging.

I have been busy making various horrid goth-inspired xmas decorations and cards, here’s some so far:

Not a great picture, sorry.

Here’s the first card design all screenprinted, hand finished and ready:

Its a variation on a design I like that I came up with at Halloween :D More to come!

Below is the first sketch of the wonderful Honour Mission for my ongoing project. She has a very strong character, and is also VERY tall, and Id like the poster to reflect this:

Ive been learning to Hula and so far I can do it around my waist and my neck too! Many bruises though…but love it! See?:

16/11/09: Sketching out & about in Brighton

Alone last night, I attended a rather wonderful event organised by Burlesque Against Breast Cancer and The art of burlesque. Im revisiting my Toulouse Lautrec adoration and thought doing some drawing at an event like this would be a great way to practice sketching people. Most of these were drawn unaware, (and very quickly!) but a few kind people posed for me for a few minutes- models, artists, magicians, harpists, girls with fake moustaches, writers, chaps, poets…

If you are one of the many people I spoke to and gave a card to, maybe you will recognise yourself in a sketch. There are more drawings to come that Im working on more detailed versions of.

After this event, I then went to the beautiful Hanbury ballroom where I drew and drank red wine, and returned home in the rain, escorted by a fascinating gentleman in the early hours.

I adore this town, and all the colourful, strange and friendly characters I encounter.

Work is coming along nicely for my poster project, and Im working on a second image of Bea DeVile. Many more performers have offered themselves as models for the project, which Im thrilled about.

I took part in my first ‘performance’ (non-band) at the Zombies vs Vampires Trailer Trash event at Komedia and it went rather well. For those curious, I was a vampire and I fought some zombies, did a homage to Thriller and then wandered around pouring edible blood from a tea pot into audience member’s mouths. Someone’s got to do it.

11/11/09: Poster project....2nd poster in progress

My next project is Bea DeVile, who I met recently. Im looking to turn this into a symmetrical playing card-esque image…Ill need her to pose for me soon though for the rest of this.

My recent poster of Kitty Peels is now in the safe, rendering hands of Traumatron as we’re trying to collaborate on this project since the subject matter is close to both our hearts.

Ive also been sketching some performers in different styles- below is an image of a girl called Miranda I have tried to do in an art deco style:

In other news, Ive had a few bits published in the last couple of weeks…an illustration in Erotic Knave magazine (look on the top shelf!), as well as another illustration in the Brighton Source student guide. Keep an eye out!

09/11/09: New poster project...1st drawing

Over the next few weeks/months, lll be designing posters for emerging burlesque performers, printing them for the performers, and theyll be for sale too.

The idea is that I get to practice screenprinting, help promote my art and the performers, as well as pay a little homage to the fascinating re-emergence of burlesque, cabaret and performance artists who have inspired me in recent years.

First up is Kitty Peels; a fantastic, handworking aerial performer, who Im lucky enough to be performing with this Friday at Komedia, Brighton and who lives only up the road from me. Everyone should have someone like Kitty as a friend and neighbour!

Ill be adding minimal colour to this one once printed, as Id like to keep the image as simple and striking as possible.

If youre a performer, and youd like to get involved with my project, please email me: katekamikaze@hotmail.co.uk

6/11/09: Sketches, sadness & ... cats

Some sketches from my moleskine…mostly prep for the Tate Takeover and sketches of people I sit next to on trains.

The last few days have been pretty sad. I wont bore you with the details…(no money + no work prospects + boy problems) but needless to say I havent been very creative of late….but the ideas are picking up again. Im trying to tell myself that hardly any artists are able to create without going through hard times.

On a more positive note, heres an interview I did for Art & Things magazine, the people who organised the Tate Takeover:

You can read the full article by clicking here.

Ive been cat sitting for some friends this week, which has given me time and space to indulge in some sketching, films and tv, as well as prepare me for my Crazy Cat Lady future.

More to come. And news to come about my ‘…burlesque’ project too.

1/11/09: The Kate Modern/Tate Kamikaze!

Yes, Halloween. Love it.

As mentioned in previous entries, I spent this Halloween at the Raw Canvas Tate Takeover, in the Tate Moderns’ Turbine Hall. Exciting! Im rather exhausted after 2 days of HORRENDOUS London travel experiences…on the upside, it reminds me why I live in Brighton. Incidentally, its a year to the day since I moved here to ‘make my fortune’….OK, I’m not rich, but Ive definately found more inspiration living here than I could ask for, and met so many interesting people.

Enough! Lets see some photos from the Tate event…first, live illustration, with 7 other lovely illustrators, all with very different styles. (And all so YOUNG- I was the weird old goth, wandering around with a glass of wine and a dead bird in my hair.):

(My scribbles are all in the bottom right corner…)

Edward with my painting:

More tomorrow.

More messing around with distressed self portraits…finished and started today. No title as yet.

Heres some process pictures:

I start working on a painting of my trapeze friend, Kitty next week. Excited about that! I think Im ready to paint other people now!

This is my last update before this:

Still not entirely sure what Im doing, but it should be interesting! Hope to see you there! :)

Have a GREAT Halloween!

26/10/09: More millinery, White Night 09 & Circus Soup...

Ive been busy making new jewellery and hair accessories:

Click here for my etsy shop!

I attended Brightons’ White Night 09. It was a blur, so heres some photos:

Last night I was lucky enough to get a free ticket to Circus Soup at the Pavilion Theatre in Brighton, to see, amongst other wonderful performers, Miss Kitty Peels doing her wonderful trapeze act. Sublime.

Click here for the Circus Soup website. They do lots of drop-in trapeze/silks/ropes classes, as well as organising events for young people to get involved.

Im currently working on some collaborative work with Kitty…more on that as it progresses!

Um, heres me mucking around in a rubber cat mask.
